You can spawnproof the roof with slab or buttons to keep the look. Other non spawnable blocks are fine aswell, like carpets or glass, even tall grass and flowers work for golems.

If the golems are spawning on top of the glass then slabs on top shouldn't stop that since iron golems can spawn inside transparent blocks, like slabs, even normally. My suggestion would be to build up the pods with solid blocks, maybe 3 or 4 layers. Then add either torches or a layer of glass to stop other mobs from spawning on them.
